I'm having this discussion with some friends.

The one piece, no moving parts, bottle between the thighs type corkscrew. Is it mechanical?

I think it is, working on the fact that it is machined to serve the purpose of removing the cork and does so by drilling into the cork and securing against the cork via a mechanical bond for the pulling process.

My friends agree that the corkscrews with moving parts are mechanical, the ones that use levers etc but not the standard old fashioned one piece puller.

I tend to think that if you need to machine a tool for the purpose of removing a cork you have created a mechanical device.

In the same way as I would say that the hammer is not mechanical, you could use many things to bang in a nail but the claw on the end is mechanical.

Please let me know your thoughts, I don’t mind being wrong I just need to know
